I'm curious about your first question; why do you think that Maui got mad at his brothers? And he certainly did like to trick his brothers by surprising them, didn't he? Maui is actually renowned for being the "Demi-God Trickster" and there are many tales about him using his trickery to his advantage. There's an awesome story about Maui trying to trick Hine-nui-te-po, the Goddess of night and death. He has this awesome ability to shape shift, and uses this ability to shape shift in to a worm and crawl in to the mouth of Hine-nui-te-po while she's sleeping. However, a piwakawaka (the fantail) laughs at Maui, and wakes Hine-nui-te-po. She swallows Maui and defeats him.
Isn't mythology wonderful? Have you read any other stories about Maui?
